• Russell Stone on revisionist Maori history

Russell Stone has a very interesting article on revisionist versions of Maori history, although he accepts that the Treaty of Waitangi implies partnership, which is tosh. Samuel Dennis covers that well.

Have you noticed that those Maori who want to go back to “traditional values” never propose returning to cannibalism and slavery, and those who want a “traditional way of life” never want to back to living in raupo huts?

Pre-European Maori life was brutal and harsh, which is why many Maori accepted the message of peace bought by Christian missionaries. In that they are no different to other indigenous peoples who embraced an alternative to constant warfare. Having said that, some of the missionaries and settlers did do wrong against the Maori.
