• Branding HIV positive people on the buttocks

This is from Stuff: sometimes totalitarianists are hilarious.

A Swaziland official who called for HIV-positive people to be branded on the buttocks to stop the spread of the virus, has apologised.

Parliamentarian Timothy Myeni drew widespread criticism after telling a parliamentarians’ workshop in Swaziland that the move would enable people to check partners for a warning stamp before sex.

“I’m very sorry. If you need me to show a sign of how sorry I am, I’m ready,” he told a news conference in Johannesburg.

Critics say Swaziland King Mswati III, who chose a new wife last year at a traditional Reed Dance, sets a bad example by encouraging polygamy in a country with one of the world’s highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates.

  1. Quite amusing.

“Swaziland King Mswati III … sets a bad example by encouraging polygamy in a country with one of the world’s highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates.”
Just to nitpick, faithful polygamy is no more likely to spread HIV than faithful monogamy. And the king is hardly going to allow his wives to be unfaithful!

People try to blame absolutely everything possible for the spread of HIV (the Catholic church’s teachings on contraception, polygamy, not enough funding for condoms) – anything to distract from the fact that it is the sexual promiscuity in modern society (especially homosexual promiscuity) that spreads HIV (and drug use of course).

Individual people making stupid decisions spread HIV. But no-one wants to be reminded to take personal responsibility for their own actions. What can we blame next…

    • Mr Dennis: I quite agree.

What I have read about Africa is the sexual promiscuity is extremely common, and often marriage is no barrier to this. Is the West any different?

What can we blame next? Evolutionary biology of course. Our ancient drive to propagate the race and all that tosh.
