Swine flu: airlines collecting more personal information

Yesterday’s press release from the Ministry of Health says in part

Over the next few days airlines will be phasing in more detailed passenger information form for all incoming passengers to complete in case these details are needed for contact tracing in the future.

Have you noticed that the government’s response to any crisis, real or imagined, is to find out more about you and/or reduce your freedoms?

I’m not medically qualified, but after reading MacDoctor and employing some common sense it seems to me that the viral horse has bolted and the government is closing the door behind it because It Is Important To Be Seen To Be Doing Something. Think about it: if you’ve been in contact with a fellow traveller who’s got swine flu and if you’ve caught it and the government has map all your movements during the infectious stage and trace everyone who may have come in contact with something you’ve touched or may have inhaled a droplet of yours; then the government has has to trace everyone they may have given the virus to in the same manner…and so on, and so on. You’re talking about many thousands of people, and anything less is a waste of time.

In my humble opinion this quarantining of people who may have been exposed to swine flu and their “close contacts” is window dressing, and this extended gathering of personal information from airline passengers is simply a means of gaining more control of people. The state cannot control what it does not know, and knowledge is the first step to power. It’s all done to help you, naturally, and virus-laden pigs fly too.

On a lighter note, Not PC has a very funny swine flu cartoon.

  1. By pure coincidence I was watching a video by Mark Steyn, and he made a comment about an airline cabin is almost the perfect controlled environment for a government, they know who you are, where you from, where you are going, what seat you will sit in, you must obey all orders or possibly end up being banned by the airline.

As you say another example to take a bit more control of the citizen.

    • workingman: also, if the airlines do not obey the orders of the state the state won’t allow the plane to land. Planes flying to the USA have to transmit personal data about passengers within 15 mins of take off so that they can be screened. That can in after 9/11. I understand that initially the US wanted to know the about the meal choices of passengers, but this was dropped.
