Free internet filtering software

In my previous post I wrote about the Australian government’s evil plan to censor the internet, supposedly to protect children.

As I said then, it is the job of parents and parents alone to protect children, and in a foot note I mentioned internet filtering services available in New Zealand.

Madeleine posted a comment and said that she uses the free K9 internet filtering software*. Madeleine has kids and she says that K9 works well, so get clicking.

*Madeleine refers to the advantage of being able to turn off the K9 filtering for the purpose of legitimate research. The filtering software from Watchdog that I referred to (in the foot note to the previous post) can be turned off, but you have to call Watchdog to do it. You can turn it back on without calling Watchdog by reinstalling the software. It’s an easy but inconvenient process.

  1. Just for the record, K9 is a Windows product. If you are running Mac OS X, Linux or any other Unix-type system, you’ll want to check out DansGuardian:

You can even get Ubuntu Christian Edition, a distribution of Linux with Dansguardian and loads of other good stuff built in, if you really want!

    • Thank you Mr Dennis.

There’s also a Ubuntu Satanic Edition: I advise against going to their smutty website.

  2. I don’t know, it’s worth going to once for a laugh… However Ubuntu Christian Edition is an official distribution recognised by the main Ubuntu project, while the Satanic edition is just a bit of a joke, it’s only Ubuntu with some satanic graphics.

There’s also an (unofficial) Ubuntu Muslim Edition. It has the Dansguardian web filtering as well, plus Quran study tools, software to remind the user of prayer times, Arabic language software, and other bits and pieces. Of course if you’re a Muslim reader interested in it I’d recommend you downloaded the Christian edition instead, you might learn something! 🙂

    • Mr Dennis: I’m aware that the satanic edition is a bit of a laugh, but the website has some smutty pictures which definitely aren’t a laugh.

  3. Ah, I see what you mean. That wasn’t there back when I first checked out the site a year or so ago.
