I’m on Google Street View

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kiwi Polemicist @ 7:57 pm

One winter’s morning I was on my way to work and I saw the Google car go past. I’ve just had a look and sure enough, my ugly mug is there.

It’s a pretty impressive piece of technology, although the progress along each street is definitely stepped (rather than seamless) and the steps seem pretty large to me, roughly equal to the width of a suburban street. That’s an observation rather than a criticism. I’m guessing that they could have made the steps smaller but didn’t do so for technical and financial reasons. Perhaps they’ll sell versions with smaller steps.

The street maps show house numbers, and with a street map plus a street view visible simultaneously I was able to identify a friend’s house in a distant city. Prior to this I had no idea what the house looked like, and a text to the friend confirmed the identification.

Click here to go to Street View. Enter an address and country. Once the map shows your desired location click on the orange man for a street view. Pressing F11 for a full screen view helps. Further instructions can be found here – I found that it was quite user friendly.

  1. I just looked at my house but I had to type a nearby address in to get it as my street number does not exist according to some official records. Bureaucracy. *sigh*

  2. If only your house didn’t exist on the list for rates demands 🙂

My church should pay rates on the manse but never does, despite multiple letters to the council.
